Brief notes- Repetition
 ‘I wish “- Imagery (Organic)
  The Person repeats the word ‘I wish’ throughout the poem and in the last stanza he repeats   ‘ I could suffer; and ‘ big ‘ to reinforce the horrors that exist in society. The phrases highlight the fear of the black child and the restrictions imposed on black in a racist society.
Use this guide to answer:

·         Relate the quoted words to an imagery
·         Explain how  the image relate to the imagery in real life and in the context of the text
·         Tell if the comprise enhances the meaning, create rhythm or intensifies   
Repetition, “I wish”
 The speaker uses repetition with the phrases'I wish' to connote an organic imagery as he connects with the way he feels inside .He feels alienated, unaccepted and rejected by society because of his skin colour. The repeated phrases emphases his feelings for acceptance his feelings for ‘belongingness’ and peace. The repetition used intensities the mood of how the ‘black boy’ felt during racism.

    A similes is uses in line 7 the speaker is enhancing the meaning of who he is by using
    wood chopper to allude to slavery and lack of freedom. he wants people to see him as a
    regular person so he uses visual imagery to state how he does not want them to see him.

Dreaming Black Boy by James Berry

SUMMARY The poem is about a black boy who wishes that he could have regular things in life. Things such as a congratulatory hug, to be educated to the highest level and to travel without harassment. The persona yearns to stop fighting for the basic right to be successful and to rise above societal expectations. LITERARY DEVICES 1. REPETITION: The constant repetition of the phrase ‘I wish’ points to a yearning, a desperation even, for the basic things that life has to offer. The repetition gives credence to the idea that the persona might believe that his wishes are actually dreams that might not come true. 2. ALLUSION: Stanza 1, lines 6 and 7, alludes to slavery, the state of lacking control over one’s own life and destiny. The fact that reference is made to this hints to how the persona feels about his life. He does not feel as if he has control over it.
